Submissions

The Mankind Project Journal is published quarterly by The ManKind Project International to educate the public about diverse men’s issues — personal and social — addressed from an MKP perspective. The Journal further presents news and announcements from The ManKind Project communities around the world.

The editorial theme changes for each quarterly edition. Previewing this page will give you a general idea of suggested subtopics, our preferred writing style and our overall editorial philosophy, so your submission has the best chance at acceptance. Thank you.

Use the SUBMISSION FORM below to submit a contribution on a selected theme. The submission form ensures that all potential contributions are considered as equally as possible, helps the editor streamline his work, and licenses copyright for publication. Please be sure to complete all sections of the form, being as detailed as possible. Please submit the best quality writing that you can; all articles are edited for style.

Submissions are open for the current Men and Mental Health” edition. Possible subtopics include depression, suicide, codependency, drug abuse, alcoholism, attitudes toward men’s issues among therapists, how gender affects one’s choice of a therapist, types of therapy conducive to men’s work, how an “i-group” affects mental health, the impact of therapy on men’s relationships and family life, the neurobiology of men’s mental health, and so on. Please read the submission guidelines below and then submit your contribution using the submission form on this page.

Submissions are welcome for the September 2010 “Men and Power” edition. Possible subtopics include how men use power, abuse power, submit to power, or deny their personal power in their families, relationships, jobs, communities, government, and society, including the political and social impact of men’s traditional power roles or how men’s power roles are changing. Please read the submission guidelines below and then submit your contribution using the submission form on this page.

Submissions are welcome for the December 2010 “Men and Faith” edition. Possible subtopics include how spiritual faith (or devout hope) affects a man’s choices and actions,  how the traditional view of men’s role is changing in diverse religions, or how changing cultural views about masculinity are impacting diverse religions. Especially wanted are true stories about how spiritual faith or faith in another person has helped a man become more authentic. Please read the submission guidelines below and then submit your contribution using the submission form on this page.

The next new edition will be published on Thursday, September  23, 2010, at the moment of the equinox, which is at 3:09 AM Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). This converts to Wednesday, September 22, 2010, at 9:059 PM in Denver, Colorado USA (UTC-6 hours), where the Journal is published.  (Click here for your local time.)

Thank you!

What We Want to Publish

We want two types of articles.

(1) A thoughtful, researched, fact-based essay or report. Stick to only one topic in the article. Rambling articles that go beyond a single topic will not be published. Pick a topic that moves you, and address that topic with depth, insight, and vitality. Generic generalizations will not be published. Drill down to be specific and meaningful. Back up your arguments with logic and verifiable evidence. Cite your sources. The length for these articles are 600 to 800 words, maximum. We need to keep the articles short so they actually are read.

(2) A narrative story of one incident in your life. Ideally this incident resulted in you becoming a more aware and emotionally authentic man. Limit yourself to only one event and its impact on you. This may be an event before you joined with MKP, or since, but not (repeat, not) a story about some experience in MKP (e.g., not about your NWTA weekend). Kindly honor this boundary. We want stories about “normal life” through which anyone might identify themselves and their life issues. At the very end, if you wish, you can briefly tell how MKP has helped you to integrate that experience into your life — but keep it very short, straight to the point, talking only about yourself (using “I statements”). Avoid using any MKP jargon. The length for these articles are 200 to 600 words, maximum. We need to keep the articles short so they really are read.

The Journal is geared for the general public, so we want writing that will make sense to average readers. No preaching or advocacy of MKP will be published. The Journal aims to educate and inspire readers, not recruit them.

Use standard story-telling elements. Open by setting the scene (date, time, place, people present, etc). Give details of the incident that help the story come alive for readers (sights, sounds, smells, physical sensations, emotions, etc). Remember that a good story always has a beginning, middle and end. To see a model of what we have in mind, look at the short pieces published in the current edition of The Sun magazine.

Writing Style: Writing contributions are expected to reflect the English language grammar, punctuation and capitalization standards of AP Style, which still leaves plenty of flexibility for writing in your natural voice. Writers need to submit work in a polished form to reduce the time required for editing and revising. Please proofread before submitting to catch spelling or typographical errors. When appropriate, the editor will work with writers to produce polished work ready for publication. The editor will ask writers to review work before publication, yet the editor and publisher hold final responsibility for editorial quality and what appears in print.

Do NOT send any attachments or files without a prior request from the editor (no exceptions) and this includes .doc or .docx files (MS Word embeds code in documents that hinder our publishing tool). Due to viruses, worms and other malware, we regret that unsolictited files will be discarded unopened. Such a security policy is lamentable yet sadly necessary. SEND TEXT ONLY THROUGH THE FORM BELOW.

Video, audio, photos, illustrations, Flash animations, or cartoons: Submissions need to reflect the highest quality standards, as you may find in any respected publication in print or on the Web. (Please request technical specs.)

Compensation: All published contributors will be recognized with a byline for their work, usually with a short author bio and photo that includes a link to their website or blog. At this time, MKP is unable to offer financial compensation for published work. We hope this changes one day.

Copyright: All work submitted must be original, or the contributor must have a clear right to submit the work. Contributors retain copyright ownership of their work (so you can publish it elsewhere), and grant to MKP a license for the nonexclusive world serial rights and related subsidiary rights, subject to the duration and terms of the U.S. Copyright Act, as amended. Compensation for publishing rights, as specified above, includes MKP’s agreement always to include a “byline” credit for the published work.
