"- Joe A.

The Fear Triad
Den Doubting Voice
Distraktion Vortex

  1. The Fear Triad
  2. Den Doubting Voice
  3. Distraktion Vortex

  • Frygt for overlevelse (hovedsagelig økonomisk)
  • Frygt for fiasko
  • Frygt for latterliggørelse

  • at have tillid til din visdom,

Tre, The Struggle-Facing the Shadows of Old Age: "Vores kultur definerer alderdommen som en tid med tilbagegang og frakobling.

Lets overveje historien for lidt.

Sigmund Freud teoretiserede, at to kræfter drev menneskelig erfaring: libido, liv instinkt og thanato s, død instinkt.

The next most significant factor determining the status of old people after possession of land is the possession of strategic knowledge. To be “strategic” the knowledge would need to be applicable, for example, in the management of a person's economy, the raising of children or in the maintenance of their health. The old people who immigrated were a resource in their homeland “strategically” but much less in the New World. Another factor determining status has always been the predominant modes and styles of economic productivity (Fischer, p.39). Once again, the old in the New World were less skilled because what they had learned about economy and survival was in another, older culture.

Before the Industrial Era, families were clustered closely together. In the 17th Century the village commons were the primary social units of England. In this system the majority of people, the peasantry at least, comprised a village community of shareholders who utilized the majority of the land on a collective basis. By the 18th Century, millions of craftspeople and artisans in England and throughout Europe were beginning to see the degradation of their labor and the undermining of their families through the displacement of handicrafts by machines”. The era of machines drew the men away from the village commons and into the new way of life that began the breakdown of the extended family. Old men could not compete for the new industrial jobs. Respect for them by younger men, therefore, began to wane. So, the fourth factor of status, an ethic of mutual dependence, began to lose its potency. The older people became less and less necessary to the survival of the family.

Yet another factor of significance is the importance of received traditions, especially religious ones. Received tradition could be defined as the inherited transmission, from generation to generation, of customs, practices and knowledge. Initiation is a ceremonial admission into a group or society. Of the four elements of initiation (ie, community, sacred space, the elder, readiness of initiate) the elder's blessing was an example of a person offering and another receiving tradition. What has happened in modern times is that elders have become less visible and ritual initiation has occurred less often. Tradition is not being “received” as readily as it was in pre-industrial times.

When in colonial America the older citizen was occasionally appreciated it facilitated continuity, stability, permanence and order in the society. The privileges of old age were apparent in the arrangement of permanent seating in many of the colonial meetinghouses. These community halls were used regularly and were a core aspect of maintaining a sense of community in early America. But, one by one, the governing committees of the meetinghouses changed the seating arrangements. The change began in the late 18 th Century and it only took a generation to complete the transition. Rather than assigning seats by age and respect, the committees sold the seats to the highest bidder. The shift from a “pluralistic system of stratification to a unitary system” was based largely on wealth. (Fischer, p.79) A stratified society with the old highly represented at the top was changing.

Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations was published in 1776. Smith's philosophy laid the foundation for the free-market doctrine. Smith taught that society could become wealthy by following your self-interest and honoring the laws of supply and demand. In 1859 came Charles Darwin's Origin of Species whose dictate was that the strongest and most fit survived in the evolution of all species. Men and women of the industrial era read Darwin to suggest that survival at any price was a natural behavior in the market place. This also suggested that the youngest, richest and most competitive should be preeminent. Around 1800, the authority of age began to be undermined and at the same time the direction of age bias began to be reversed. The doctrine of profit and the ethic of competition were new and unique to Western societies.

People began to move toward the cities and away from the village community of elders, craftsmen and fellow farmers on common land. Joint work and shared roles in farming and craftsmanship waned in favor of the more competitive world of industrial production. Men were becoming a collection of competitors for scarce jobs. The change in older people's relationship to younger was becoming apparent. Older men and women stopped seeing themselves as responsible for teaching and mentoring the young. The young were seen as a threat. The young were becoming more capable of taking over the jobs and they lost respect for the older and less competitive men. Older women remained in the village community longer than the men but they increasingly felt that they were alone as educator for the young. The older men began to lose self-respect as the young men moved into the industrialized world and rejected the older men as incapable of preparing them for the workplace.

In ancient Eastern philosophy such as that found in India, the final and highest stage of life was what the Hindu calls the sannyasan ashrama . The final stage began at age 75, when a man left his property and family and lived in poverty with a commitment to self-realization and service to society. In China, Taoism taught that in old age males are set free from the prison of their possessions. The Taoist felt that a person is thus promoted to the rank of living spirit. Although modern people of India and China are questioning the utility of these ancient philosophies, it was primarily Western males who led the way off the land, out of the soul and into the world of competition for wealth that, in a twist of fate, has robbed men and women of independence, security, liberty and birthrights.

The movement away from family and the land was a turning point for male and female gender roles. Women were forced to stay home, watch the children, do the cooking and the washing and generally maintain some connection to the community in which they lived. While some great women including Florence Nightingale, Dorothea Dix and Susan B. Anthony fostered the first feminist movement in the 19th Century, the common woman remained on the land. When women did take jobs in the factories, the family system went into an uproar. A home where women were not always present was subversive to the patriarchal marriage. The home thus defined had never before existed. It was a creation of the Industrial Revolution. Men and women were away from home while at work. They had to compete for jobs and do work that was meaningless except for the income produced. Work began to mean long hours performing rote tasks away from the family for income earned, not from the sale of crafts but from the sale of a person's time and energy.

Working for money, for gain, is only as old as the 18th Century. The village commons had an economy based on subsistence, handicrafts, barter and the sharing of land. In medieval Christian society, people were condemned for attempting to gain profit from the sale of goods or the loaning of money. The central principle of most pre-modern cultures was gift giving. Anthropologists found that in old cultures financial gain seldom was an impulse to work under the original native condition. The Industrial Era concept of working for income alone not only moved people out of the village but also separated them from their reason to celebrate their creativity and survival skills.

The effect of the Industrial Revolution on many other men, women and children was to cause a shifting of the mute, uneducated, leaderless and now more and more property-less common population” towards the new manufacturing areas . There they became a part of the impoverished craftspeople already in place in the growing towns of tacky and unkempt houses. Factories belching black smoke and beginning devastation to the ecology of two-hundred years were surrounded by the streets of workers' homes, built cheaply, without space rented to the men and women who had moved there from the farms. There were no schools, no churches and nothing that reminded the new residents of creation and God.

Fathers living in the 19th Century began to detach emotionally from their family and were away from home a great deal. This poem written in 1868 depicts the family condition of the family with a father who worked for wages:

***
Father is Coming.

The clock is on the stroke of six,
The father's work is done.
Sweep up the hearth and tend the fire,
And put the kettle on.

The wild night-wind is blowing cold.
'Tis dreary crossing o'er the world.
He's crossing o'er the world apace,
He's stronger than the storm;

He does not feel the cold, not he,
His heart, it is warm:
For father's heart is stout and true.,
As ever human bosom knew…

Nay, do not close the shutters child;
For along the land,
The little window looks,
And he can see it shining plain.

I've heard him say he loves to mark
The cheerful firelight through the dark.
Hark! Hark! I hear his footsteps how:
He's through the garden gate.

Run, little Bess, and open the door,
And do not let him wait.
Shout, baby, shout! And clap thy hands,
For father on the threshold stands.

***

Hold onto your nuts, elders. Launch your elder journey and we all pray you survive it because we are being called. We are the one we have been waiting for.

Homme-Training – Psychologies Magazine – France

April 3, 2012 · Category: Men and Initiation , Men's News , MKP News

Nearly fifty thousand men have passed through the doors leading them into a powerful once-in-a-lifetime experience that we call The New Warrior Training Adventure.

Sometimes our familiarity with 'the weekend' can lead us to forget just how unique and world rocking this event is for those who have never experienced it.

We at the ManKind Project Journal are happy to see an article in “Psychologies”, a magazine published in France, talking about the experiences of a recent group of men who did the Training. The quality of the experience can be judged by the fact that, in France, most NWTAs are booked solid six months in advance.

If you are a New Warrior, and would like to re-live how powerful and moving your weekend was, check out this excellent piece.

If you are a man who has yet to challenge himself with this great adventure, read just how powerful it was for these French participants, and ask yourself if you're ready to take a risk to get the kind of life you want.

The Psychologies article can be found on the ManKind Project Homepage. The translation from the original French was done by a men with whom I did my own NWTA.

Declared Elders of the ManKind Project

February 7, 2012 · Category: **THE DOOR** , Men as Elders , MKP News

From Terry Jones

The men over fifty in the ManKind Project are our elders. But, do we accept them as elders or do we expect them first to declare? We define a declared elder as an elder who has self chosen to serve by declaring himself an elder of and in his community. Many MKP men expect an elder to declare himself. Have you considered, however, what the status of an elder is in your view if he has not declared? Read more

Leaving it Better – MKP San Diego

December 8, 2011 · Category: Men and Work , MKP News

ManKind Project San Diego

A common saying during any ManKind Project event is “Let's leave it better than we found it.” This applies not only to the sites across the world that we rent for our trainings, but also the relationships between MKP men and the communities and people we meet. Often there will be 60-70 men on hand for a ManKind Project training event, and their impact will be noticed by local store clerks and restaurant owners, who often comment on the camaraderie shared by our motley crews.

When authentic men get together, they bring laughter and warmth with them, and they leave people feeling better for the connection.

Broken Rock Ranch, where the San Diego ManKind Project community holds New Warrior Training Adventures, had a flag pole raised in 1962. It was falling down and the base was deteriorating. A San Diego MKP man, who is also a US military veteran, donated and had installed a new flag pole. The men of the ManKind Project San Diego dedicated the new flagpole to kick off their December Training weekend.

The flag pole and the flags looked good flying in the wind!

Honing Our Integral Edges

All Quadrants, All Levels

by Boysen Hodgson

In the ManKind Project, we're voracious integrators. Our trainings and groups are a tightly mixed alchemical combination of exercises, modalities and practices from across the spectrum of personal growth, psychology, spiritual, ritual and physical practices. Men from different traditions and multiple generations have brought their unique gifts to the ManKind Project and our men's circles, and men show up around them to learn and integrate new ways of thinking and new skills to use in the work that we do.

We're a learning organization, at every level. Here's one of the ways I've learned.

For nearly 2 years, Rich Tosi, David Kaar, Tom Pittner, George Daranyi, Carl Griesser, John Gaughn, Bill Kauth, myself and a up to 5 other ManKind Project leaders and community members met on the phone every two weeks to talk about the intersection and integration of Spiral Dynamics and Integral thinking into the DNA of the ManKind Project.

The call was commonly called the 'Spiral Call'. It started as a court of support for our past Chairman, George Daranyi. It evolved into a platform for a close knit tribe of men to discuss cultural change on a micro and a macro level.

We explored how to fully embody the kind of leadership we want to model in MKP – an Integral style that deeply honors and values the differences and stages that men who come to us are in, and invites them to push their edges. A style of leadership that seeks to transcend attachment to any one way of seeing the world … and embraces and honors them all for the gifts they bring and the ways they have helped all of us evolve. (to transcend AND include)

We weren't holding theoretical discussions. We were looking on every phone call at specific issues, challenges and evolutionary steps that the ManKind Project was facing. We were using the wisdom of the group and the framework of Integral thinking to explore ways to broaden our understanding, increase our effectiveness, and shift the culture of MKP to an organization ready for second tier leadership and operating from that space to the extent that any of us were capable. These calls were some of the most lively, challenging and vital conversations that I have experienced in MKP.

My way of seeing the world, the way I facilitate groups and individuals, the way I manage my business and my relationships, the way I do Yoga and work out … it all shifted as a result of these calls. My level of acceptance … for myself and others … has steadily increased.

Right now David Kaar (one of the participants on that phone call) has teamed up with Doshin Michael Nelson in Colorado to offer an introductory course on Integral Theory and Practice (Starts Wednesday August 17, 2011). To me, this is a no-brainer. It is primarily focused on helping communities connected with the ManKind Project begin to explore the integration of Integral Theory into their own leadership and organizational frames.

Download the PDF to Learn More and to Sign up for the Course.

Integral theory and practice is another set of tools that can be an effective way to augment the effectiveness of anything else that you may be practicing. It's another lens through which to view the world. For me, the more different sets of 'specs' that I have at my disposal, the more easily I will be able to have a set of shades for any situation.

Keep on integrating. It's FUN!

Martin Marks Declares Himself 'Gladiator in Chief'

Martin Marks, the Interim Executive Director of the ManKind Project USA, declared himself “Gladiator in Chief” in a conference call held Friday, April 1st. It was the 8th of 10 conference calls that Marks was scheduled to participate in on Friday.

Venligst give mig min trefork. Jeg er ude med Underoos. A-Ho ".

Other men on the call were somewhat surprised, but the move was not totally unexpected.

MKP's 25-Year Anniversary Celebration

September 22, 2010 · Category: MKP News

Men of the Project:

On October 21-23 in Louisville, Kentucky, The ManKind Project International (“MKPI”) will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary.

In February of 1985, Ron Hering, Bill Kauth and Rich Tosi invited the first group of men to attend a “Wildman Weekend” outside of Chicago, Illinois. Since then, nearly 44,000 men worldwide have attended a similar version of that experience.

At our anniversary celebration, we will commemorate that historic event, honor the men who created that training and the organization formed to spread it to the world, and honor a host of other men who have helped along the way. We also will honor the men who died along the MKP road.

Many of the groups who were influenced or who have been allied or aligned with our core values and our work will also be acknowledged. This will be a very special event.

In addition, we have created a Circle of Honor of MKPI. This is essentially the “Hall of Fame” for the Project. The first five men selected for the Circle will be inducted on Saturday evening. The keynote dinner should not be missed.

The Celebration is called “The 25/25 Anniversary: Taking the Next Breath” because the gathering will not only be looking backward at the past 25 years, we also will create the celebratory footprint for the next 25 years of our institutional life.

Every person who is interested in celebrating our past and investing in our work going forward is invited to attend. Bring your selves, your partners, wives,
fellow warriors, I groups, communities of men, your stories of the past, and your passion for the future of MKP. All are welcome.

And bring your dancing shoes. We will have a big dance celebration on Saturday night, October 23, to ring in the next 25 years. I hope to see you all there.

The MKP Mental Health Resource Team: History, Process and Mission

June 20, 2010 · Category: 2010 June - Mental Health , MKP News

by David Rose

One of the ongoing narratives of The ManKind Project has been the tension between keeping the New Warrior Training Adventure (NWTA) a fierce and powerful experiential training while at the same time keeping a consciousness around safety — whether physical, spiritual, cultural, or psychological.

There have been several major advances in our consciousness around safety. In the mid-1990's, a new emphasis on pre-training medical screening emerged. A comprehensive Confidential Medical Questionnaire was created and put into use in 1997. In that same year, the Safety Committee was formed to bring men together who would give input into how to create “best practices” for physical safety on the training.

In 2002, the Process Safety Committee was formed to focus on the psychological impact of processes in the training. Soon thereafter, the need for assessing the psychological readiness of a man before his participating in the NWTA became clear. In August of 2008, a group of men began meeting by email and phone bridge, and from these meetings emerged the Mental Health Resource Team (MHRT).

There are two qualifications for being on the MHRT.

First, a man must be a qualified and licensed mental health professional (in nearly all cases a psychiatrist, psychologist, or psychiatric social worker), trained to assess such disorders and conditions as PTSD, Bi-Polar Disorder, Major Depression, homicidality/assaultiveness, suicidality, disorders of impulse, and substance abuse or dependence.

Second, each man must have a reasonable degree of experience in staffing the NWTA. This is defined as five or more NWTA staffings and the vouch of a certified leader or co-leader with whom the man has staffed. This ensures that the MHRT man can assess a potential initiate in the context of the experience he is signing up to do.

The MHRT is typically contacted by the local Reviewing Physician following his review of the Confidential Medical Questionnaire. The Psychosocial section, revised and expanded by the MHRT in 2008, alerts the Physician to the potential presence of one of the conditions mentioned above. The MHRT man reviews the form and — depending on what information emerges along the way — contacts the potential initiate or staff man, and (with permission) may contact the treating therapists and physicians, as well.

The main question addressed is whether there is sufficient concern to advise that the man not participate in the NWTA, given his situation and condition at the time of the referral. Secondary input may be made about what the man may need on the training for optimal benefit, cautions about possible traumatic triggers or impaired cognitive functioning, and such like. Regardless of the issue, the MHRT functions in an advisory capacity, making recommendations to the reviewing physician and to the training leader, who has the final call

Since the MHRT went operational in late 2009, more than a dozen referrals have been made. We have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from Reviewing Physicians, leaders and co-leaders of the NWTA, and even from family members of men who we have (indirectly) served.

David S. Rose is a Co-Leader in the Greater Washington MKP Community. He has been a practicing psychologist for more than 22 years with extensive training in diagnosing and treating early and recent trauma, disorders of mood, impulse, and process addiction, plus suicide intervention. Seventh World Elder Gathering

June 20, 2010 · Category: 2010 June - Mental Health , MKP News

Held October 20-22 in conjunction with MKP's 25-Year Anniversary Celebration in Louiville, Kentucky, the Seventh World Elder Gathering (WEG) for this first time this year features men and women participating throughout the event. A closer connection of the masculine and feminine began last year at the Sixth World Elder Gathering in the UK, which was the first international MKP gathering held outside the US

Both the WEG and the MKP 25-Year Anniversary Celebration encourage couples to attend, and both allow for a discount if a man or woman brings a partner.

The WEG theme this year: “Living into Sovereign Service and Blessing in Everyday Life.” Keynote speakers at this elders gathering include Michael Boyle, Tom Daly and Jude Blitz.

“Now more than ever the world needs our blessing and elder service,” said WEG 2010 Chairman Allan Podbelsek. “We will launch this year's Elder Gathering by appreciating our life wisdom and our natural instinct to give blessing and provide sacred service.”

The 2010 WEG will be “a living laboratory to connect personal soul with our community soul and the world soul,”said Tom Daly, who with Jude Blitz will work with elders the first morning of the gathering. “We will root ourselves in our ancestral wisdom, our bodies, and especially our hearts. We'll reaffirm our connections to the earth and to the generations to come.

“We will acknowledge the shadows of service — such as pride, self-inflation, control, over-doing, self-absorption, or caretaking,” said Jude Blitz, a facilitator in Family Constellations Work, “then we will grasp the gifts hidden in those shadows. This will offer us the opportunity to tap our best elder gifts through experiential processes that we can bring to life throughout our gathering. We will have a deeper sense of sovereign service and blessing to take home to our families and communities.”
